Veteran Bollywood actor, director and comedian Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed Jaffrey aka Jagdeep(81) breathed his last on July 8 at 8.30 pm at his residence in Bandra following age-related issues. The news was confirmed by his son, actor Javed Jaffery.
The actor is best known for portraying Soorma Bhopali in the cult film Sholay. Jagdeep has worked in almost 400 films for seven decades and crafted a unique individual style of his own. He made his entry in Bollywood as a child artist in B. R. Chopra’s Afsana in 1951, then went on to do films like Ab Dilli Door Nahin, Guru Dutt’s Aar Paar, Bimal Roy’s Do Bigha Zamin and AVM’s Hum Panchi Ek Dal Ke. Jagdeep was introduced as a leading character by AVM productions in the films Bhabhi, Barkha and Bindaya, and went on to do more films as a leading man. He established himself as a comedian with ‘Brahmachari’ in 1968.
In 1988 Jagdeep took the director’s chair. He directed film Soorma Bhopali, based on his character from Sholay in which he took the central role.
Some of his iconic films are, Qurbani, Agent Vinod, Shahenshah, Phool Aur Kaante, Andaz Apna Apna, China Gate, Kahin Pyaar Na Ho Jaaye, Bombay To Goa, Gali Gali Chor Hai, etc.
The legend’s final onscreen appearance was in Masti Nahi Sasti in 2017 directed by Ali Abbas Chaudhary featuring Kader Khan, Shakti Kapoor, Johnny Lever, and Prem Chopra.
Jagdeep was taken to Mazagaon today morning where his last rites were performed by his sons, Actor Javed Jaffery and Naved Jaffery.
